- The Zero Point of Charge (zpc) of some Forest Soils in Tarai and Teesta Alluvial Regions of West Bengal

The zero point of charge of some Tarai and Teesta alluvial soils under forest floor in West Bengal was studied. The electrochemical behaviour of these soils was found to be similar to that of the constant potential systems in which the surface potential is determined by H+ and OH+ ions in the equilibrium solution, hence charge distributed varied substantially with pH and electrolyte concentration. The point of zero charge of the soils ranged from pH 2.30 to 2.90 with the Karnajora soils series having the lowest values and the Haihaipathar soil series the highest. The (pH KC1 - ZPC) values of Haihaipathar soils series (varying from 0.90 to 1.30) are less than that of Karanjora series (varying from 2.30 to 2.45) indicating that Haihaipathar soil series is more developed than Karnajora soil series.

Callus of the leaves, node and bud of Ipomoea obscura (L) was initiated on MS basal media supplemented with various combinations of auxins 2,4- dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and naphthalene acetic acid with cytokines kinetin and benzyl amino-purin (BAP). Callus initiation was observed in all media but with varied mass. Highest percentage of callus response was obtained in combination of 2,4-D (0.8 mg/L) with kinetin (0.8mg/L); NAA (0.2mg/L) with BAP(0.2 mg/L); NAA (0.8 mg/L) with kinetin (0.8 mg/L) for explants leaves, node and bud, respectively. The callus was white in 2,4-D- and green in NAA- supplemented MS media. An efficient micropropogation protocol was developed for medicinal plant Ipomoea obscura (L.) by in-vitro culture of nodal part of mature plant. The MS media supplemented with 0.8 mg/L NAA with 0.8 mg/L kinetin induced three shoots per node in an average and was best for axillary bud proliferation.Keywords

Aim: Subclinical mastitis in bovines is mainly responsible for the huge economic loss of the dairy farmers, of which Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the causative agents. The study was aimed at a screening of suspected milk samples from different cattle farms of West Bengal for detection and confirmation of P. aeruginosa strains followed by their characterization.
Materials and Methods: Around 422 milk samples were screened from different dairy farms primarily by on-spot bromothymol blue (BTB) test and then in the lab by somatic cell counts (SCC) to finally consider 352 samples for detection of P. aeruginosa. Selective isolation and confirmation of the isolates were done using selective media, viz., cetrimide and Pseudomonas agar followed by confirmation by fluorescent technique. Molecular characterization of the strains was done by polymerase chain reaction for the presence of toxA (enterotoxin A, 352 bp) and exoS (exoenzyme S, 504 bp) genes.
Results: Approximately, 371 (87.9%) samples were positive in on-spot BTB test among which 352 (94.8%) samples revealed high SCC values (more than 3 lakh cells/ml) showing infection when screened. Among these, 23 (6.5%) samples yielded typical Pseudomonas sp. isolates out of which only 19 (5.4%) isolates were confirmed to be P. aeruginosa which showed characteristic blue-green fluorescence due to the presence of pigment pyoverdin under ultraviolet light. Out of these 19 isolates, 11 isolates were positive for toxA, 6 isolates for exoS, and 2 for both these pathogenic genes.
Conclusion: Approximately, 5.4% cases of bovine subclinical mastitis infections in South Bengal were associated with P. aeruginosa which possess pathogenic genes such as toxA (63.2%) and exoS (36.8%).

Adsorbents prepared from inexpensive materials of guava leaf biomass, mango bark and bagasse were studied for As(III) removal from the aqueous solution. The effects of pH, contact time, initial As(III) concentration and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption of As(III) were studied using batch experiments. Adsorption process was also verified with Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Redlich–Peterson models. Langmuir isotherm fitted best in the experimental data. Application of Langmuir isotherm to the system yielded the maximum capacities of 1.35 mg g–1, 1.25 mg g–1 and 1.05 mg g–1 for bagasse, mango bark and guava leaf biomass respectively, in the range of As(III) concentration as 10–140 mg l–1. The dimensionless equilibrium parameter, RL, signifies favourable adsorption of As(III) on all adsorbents and was observed to be in the range of 0.029–0.294, 0.021– 0.235 and 0.021–0.234, for bagasse, mango bark and guava leaf biomass respectively (0 < RL < 1). One of the principal costs in opencast mine is related to application of loading and haulage equipment. The real challenge of mine management of an opencast mines is to select the proper fleet size of dumpers and shovels and to utilize them effectively; it secures the production needs of a mine as well as minimizes costs of production. Overall equipment effectiveness can be used as a tool to measure the performance and utilization of shovel-dumper operation in opencast mines. Authors of the paper have discussed on the cycle time of shovel and dumper, their dispatching and allocation problem and proper combination in opencast mining operation to optimize the productivity and to reduce the operational cost after reviewing several research artcles.Keywords
